Vietnamese: Khi Cô-Đơn Em Nhớ Ai

So today I have a funny story for y'all. One day, I was making a list of my videos on Youtube, both posted and to be made (and it's lying there waiting to be finished), and I saw a copyright claim. The contested video was this one, and the claim was for… a Vietnamese song. What? I was singing a Chinese song… welp, turns out that Chinese song was a Chinese version of this Vietnamese one, and today, with the lyrics from here, we're trying to decipher it. So lyrics, sided with Google Translation:

Right off the bat, words of caution:

1. The video captions have «chiếc hôn vẫn xa rời», not «chiếc hôn vẫn xa vời», and the captions seem to match the video as far as my ears tell me;
2. «tìng này dạt dao» sounds like «tìng nầy dạt dao» to me;
3. In «Đặt bàn tay lên khoé môi», the đặt sounds like đặn because it's apparently customary, when singing a super-short vowel on long notes, to add an n to sing on, so it's đặt-n that you're hearing; also, I hear «tây» not «tay»;
4. In «vẫn say đắm trong lòng», I hear sây;
5. In the second repetition of the last section, the last line changes to «Hãy nghe trái tim còn vẫn nhớ thương» as per the captions.

Let's get into this, shall we? I will split the lines differently, so that the above lines 4-5, 9-10, 11, 13-14, 17 will be split into 2.

1. L. 1: Từng giọt mưa long lanh xôn xao
   
   • Từng: Every;
   • giọt: droplet (also classifier);
   • mưa: rain;
   • long-lanh: glittering, gleaming, sparkleing, glistening;
   • xôn-xao: to be noisy, loud, uneasy, anxious;
   So «Từng giọt mưa long-lanh xôn-xao», «Every glittering drop of rain is noisy».
2. L. 2: Để mộng mơ trong em bay cao
   
   • Đê: to let, allow / in order that;
   • mộng-mơ: OK so, this word isn't reported by any of my sources, but both syllables mean "dream", switching the syllables produces "mơ-mộng" reported as synonym of "mơ-màng" which means "to dream", and Glosbe translations indicate "mộng-mơ" actually means "dream", so I'll take it as meaning "dream" and as one word;
   • trong: in (preposition);
   • em: ah, the bastardness of pronouns in Vietnamese; I mean, contextuality; how do you like a pronoun that, depending on the relation between speaker and addressee, can mean both "I" and "you"? Well, this is it; "em", when used by someone younger or by a woman to a male, means "I", otherwise it means "you"; here the singer is male, so there is no doubt this means "you";
   • bay: fly;
   • cao: high;
   So «Để mộng-mơ trong em bay cao», «Lets the dreams in you fligh high»; wow, a literal translation that fits the tune!
3. L. 3: Em đâu biết tình này(nầy) dạt dào
   
   • Em: You (cfr. above);
   • đâu: where / from wherever / no(t);
   • biết: to learn, know, realize;
   • tình: [ability to feel compassion] / romantic love / romantic relationship;
   • này: this/here; nầy is a dialectal variation, so I'm having it in the lyrics; it is weird though that it's supposedly Centra-Southern where the accent of the singer is clearly northern with all those zs…
   • dạt-dào: overflowing;
   So «Em đâu biết tình nầy dạt dào», «You don't know this overflowing love»;
4. L. 4: Phố xá thênh thang
   
   • Phố-xá: Streets;
   • thênh-thang: spacious, broad, large;
   So «Phố-xá thênh-thang», «Streets are spacious»;
5. L. 5: Dáng ai về mơ lúc vai kề
   
   • Dáng: figure;
   • ai: many meanings including "someone" as in «Sự cần thiết của Vịnh Xuân Quyền là theo bóng dáng ai đó không phải theo tay họ.», Glosbe example, «The essence of Wing Chun is to follow one's shadow, not his hand.»; according to this answer, it can be used to refer to the beloved one;
   • về: return / about;
   • mơ: dream;
   • lúc: Moment / when;
   • vai: shoulder;
   • kề: right next to, adjacent;
   So «Dáng ai về mơ lúc vai kề», «The shape of someone [is] in a dream of a time of close shoulders»;

This pair of line could also be read with the streets being the "topic", so «[In] spacious streets» (recall Vietnamese puts adjectives after nouns, so "streets spacious", not "spacious streets" as English has it), and the "figure of someone" itself being the "mơ", which can mean "dream" or, in poetry, "memory"; so «[In the] spacious streets, / A figure of someone comes back, a memory of a time of close shoulders»;

6. L. 6: Vẫn thấy miên man từng đêm những cơn mê.
   
   • Vẫn: Still, Yet;
   • thấy: see, find, feel;
   • miên-man: mesmerizing, non-stop;
   So «Vẫn thấy miên-man», «Still [I/you] incessantly feel»;
7. L. 7: Từng đêm những cơn mê
   
   • từng: every;
   • đêm: night;
   • những: just;
   • cơn: classifier for bouts of diseases etc.;
   • mê: lose sleep;
   So «Từng đêm những cơn mê», «Every night [is] just a bout of sleeplessness»;
8. L. 8: Nhẹ nhàng ru trong đêm thâu
   
   • Nhẹ-nhàng: light, gentle, soft;
   • ru: lull, sing to sleep;
   • trong: clear / in;
   • đêm: night;
   • thâu: all;
   Now, thâu is usually before what it modifies, e.g. «thâu đêm», «all night long», but here it ends the line, so this must mean «throughout the night»; so «Nhẹ-nhàng ru trong đêm thâu», «Gently lulling [you?] throughout the night»;
9. L. 9: Lung linh cơn mưa ngâu
   
   • Lung-linh: glistening;
   • cơn: classifier;
   • mưa-ngâu: persistent rain of the seventh lunar month;
   So «Lung-linh cơn mưa-ngâu», «A shimmering rainstorm»;
10. L. 10: Mưa gieo mãi làm gì giọt sầu
    
    • Mưa: rain;
    • gieo: sow, cast, throw, spread; I think this is one term you can use for falling rain?
    • mãi: for a long time / until;
    • làm-gì: "what for" on Glosbe and another dictionary, "what" on Google;
    • giọt: droplet; not classifier AFAICY;
    • sầu: melancholic / melancholy;
    So «Mưa gieo mãi làm-gì giọt sầu», «Rain keeps falling, what are the droplets melancholic for?»;
11. L. 11: Hỡi trái tim cô đơn lạc loài hãy nở nụ cười
    
    • Hỡi: Oh;
    • trái-tim: heart;
    • cô-đơn: lonely;
    • lạc-loài: «Bị tách, bị lạc khỏi đồng loại, bơ vơ» (Separated, lost from his fellow man, helpless) as per Viet Wikt + Google, «Égaré dans un milieu infâme» (lost in an infamous place) as per Fr Wikt, so stranded, I'd guess;
    So «Hỡi trái-tim cô-đơn lạc-loài», «Oh lonely stranded heart»;
12. L. 12: Hãy nở nụ cười
    
    • Hãy: mild imperative sentence-initial particle;
    • nở: bloom;
    • nụ: classifier for smiles and kisses;
    • cười: smile;
    So «Hãy nở nụ cười», «Bloom out a smile»;
13. L. 13: Để thấy quanh em
    
    • Để: so as to;
    • thấy: find, see;
    • quanh: around;
    • em: you (cfr. above);
    So «Để thấy quanh em», «To see that around you»;
14. L. 14: Tình yêu vẫn có đôi.
    
    • Tình-yêu: love;
    • vẫn: still;
    • có: have, be there, …;
    • đôi: double / pair;
    So «Tình-yêu vẫn có đôi», «Love still exists double / twofold»? Maybe «There is still some love», with đôi taken as a "quantity not one but few"? Hmm, doesn't convince me; maybe «There are still couples with love» or something like that? Not sure; see this Quora question;
15. L. 15: Đặt bàn tay(tây) lên khoé môi
    
    • Đặt: Place, put;
    • bàn-tay: hand; bàn-tây doesn't seem to exist; bàn and tây don't seem to go together well, and I'm not even sure I hear tây anymore, so tay it is;
    • lên: up(wards); also, «sur» (on) per Fr Wikt;
    • khoé: corner;
    • môi: lip(s);
    So «Đặt bàn-tay lên khoé môi», «Put the hand on the corner of the lip»;
16. L. 16: Chiếc hôn vẫn xa vời(rời)
    
    • Chiếc: classifier for "inanimate tangible things"; I guess kisses classify?
    • hôn: kiss;
    • vẫn: still;
    • xa-vời or xa-rời? Cfr. this question; AFAICT both mean "far away", and I can't tell the difference;

17. L. 17: Đêm vẫn lạnh lùng dù qua phố đông
    
    • Đêm: Night;
    • vẫn: still;
    • lạnh-lùng: cold / unfriendly;
    • dù: umbrella / even if;
    • qua: through, across, by / last / be gone / cross / I (older males);
    • phố: street / house, apartment;
    • đông: crowded, etc;
    So «Đêm vẫn lạnh-lùng dù qua phố đông», «The night is still cold even if through crowded streets»;
18. L. 18: Người yêu ơi em biết không
    
    • Người-yêu: Romantic partner, "darling" I'd say;
    • ơi: Suffix to kinship title, or just some kind of Japanese -chan/-kun/whatnot;
    • em: you, see above;
    • biết: know;
    • không: "question particle", I suppose it's a question tag?
    So «Người-yêu ơi em biết không», «Honey, don't you know?»;
19. L. 19: Vẫn say(sây) đắm trong lòng
    
    • Vẫn: Still;
    • say-đắm means "to be in love", and sây-đắm doesn't appear to mean anything, and investigating the sây syllables requires digging into tone option, so screw that;
    • trong: in;
    • lòng: heart;
    So «Vẫn say-đắm trong lòng», «[I'm] still in love in [my] heart»;
20. L. 20: Dù thời gian trôi xa
    
    • Dù: even if;
    • thời-gian: time;
    • trôi: drift;
    • xa: far away;

21. L. 21: Tình vẫn trao người thiết tha.

    • còn-vẫn: both syllables as well as the syllable-switch mean "still, yet", so I'm assuming this is a single word with that meaning;
    • nhớ-thương: «Nghĩ thiết tha đến người thân mến vắng mặt hay đã mất», which Googles to «Think fervently about someone you love is absent or deceased», whcih definitely matches Fr Wikt's «Penser affectueusement à», «Think affectionately about»; so I think «miss» is the word I will use;
    So «Hãy nghe trái-tim còn-vẫn nhớ-thương», «Listen to the heart still missing [you]».
