Albanian: Aromë portokalli

Today we have an Albanian traditional song suggested to me by my advisor. So I originally found this video. I looked for the lyrics on 5/5/21, and found tekste shqip and tekste shqip #2, two different lyrics for two different versions. And then I looked at the video, and it was yet different, so I even had to turn to Quora for help transcribing it. And then I went to lyrics translate and found #1 and #2, both of which have since extensively changed due to my activity. In fact, #2 is how I finally found a video matching #1 as well as tekste shqip #1. Because I apparently was completely blind to the video on tekste shqip :). There are also another two versions, given by Gavagai in a comment to lyricstranslate #1, which I also give below. But let me get the originals down below, with their original versions (linebreaking readjusted for the post) and the rectified versions by me in the right column. Translations will come after the analysis, and also my own text, a sort of combination of all the versions below.

So it seems clear that every segment is supposed to be repeated twice – except tekste shqip 2 didn't get the memo and has two segments, each with two different versions in a row. Let's get to the analysis.

1. L. 1: «Në një portokalle, moj,» (TS1, TS2, vid), «Te një portokalle, moj,» (LT1, LT2), «Nën një portokalle, moj» (G1, G2), so the differences are just në/te/nën in the first word;
   
   • Në/te/nën: prepositions with accusative, resp. "in", "at", "under";
   • një: a;
   • portokalle: presumably accusative of portokall/portokale, "orange" or "orange tree";
   • moj: used to call unto a female;
   So «In/At/Under an orange (tree), babe»; I prefer the nën or te variants with the tree, the në may just be me mishearing the video and everybody else mistranscribing;
2. L. 2: «Të ndala unë ty,» (TS1, TS2.1, vid, G1, G2), «Të njoha unë ty,» (TS2.2), «Të dola unë ty,» (LT1, LT2), so the differences are just with the verb, ndala/njoha/dola;
   
   • Të…ty: emphatic object, if you will, we have both a clitic and a stressed accusative/dative second-person singular pronoun "you, thee";
   • Ndala/njoha/dola: aorist second-person singular of ndal/njoh/dal, "stop", "recognize", "come out" respectively; the first two will read the object as direct, so accusative, the third one will take a dative (indirect object);
   • unë: I;
   So «I stopped/recognized you» or «I came out to you»;
3. L. 3: «Lulet e limonit, moj,»;
   
   • Lulet: nominative plural definite of lule "flower";
   • e: adjectival article fem. pl.;
   • limonit: Idk, some kind of genitive of limon or something; I know what the sentence mean, but I am unable to conclusively analyze this word;
   • moj see above;
   So «The lemon flowers, babe»;
4. L. 4: «Të binin në sy.» (TS1, TS2.1, LT1, LT2, G2), «Të rrinin mbi kry'.» (TS2.2), «Na binin në sy» (G1), so the variants are të/na and then TS2.2 has almost everything different;
   
   • Të/Na: dative of ti "you, thou" or of ne "we";
   • binin/rrinin: imperfect third plural of bie/rri, "fall" and "stay" respectively; actually there is a bit of mystery here, because "binin" can also be from "bij", which a Quoran states is the same as "bie", but Wiktionary gives as "grow out, sprout"; obviously the "bie" meaning is meant here;
   • në/mbi: in / on top of, prepositions with accusative;
   • sy/kry': accusative/nominative singular (for the latter) or singular/plural (for the former) indefinite of sy/krye "eye" or "head";
   So «Fell into your/our eye(s)» or «Stayed on your head»;
5. L. 5: «Ule kokën poshtë, moj,» (TS1, LT1, LT2, G2), «Ngrije kokën lartë, moj,» (TS2, vid, G1), so we have completely different renditions;
   
   • Ule/Ngrije: aorist/imperfect second-singular of ul/ngrij "lower" and "raise";
   • kokën: accusative singular definite of kokë "head";
   • poshtë/lartë: adverbs, "low" and "high";
   • moj see above;
   So «You lowered your head down low, babe» or «You were raising your head high, babe»;
6. L. 6: «Seç, më dogji malli.» (TS1, LT1, LT2, G2), «Se më dogji malli» (TS2, vid, G1), so seç/se is the only difference;
   
   • Se is because and seç is lo and behold;
   • më: accusative/dative clitic of unë, here accusative;
   • dogji: aorist third-singular of djeg "burn";
   • malli: definite singular nominative of mall, here meanng "longing, yearning";
   So «Lo, longing burnt me» or «Because longing burnt me»;
7. L. 7: «Vinte er' e gushës, moj,» (TS1), «Vinte era e gushës, moj,» (TS2, LT2), «Vinte gusha jote, moj,» (vid), «Binte er' e gushës, moj,» (LT1), «Binte gusha jote moj» (G1), «Vinte gusha jote moj» (G2), so many oscillations;
   
   • Vinte/Binte: imperfect third-singular of vij/bie, "come" and "fall"/"bring"; let me quote Gavagai on this: «"bie erë" = "I smell/it smells" or "I have a fragrance/it has a fragrance" […] "vjen erë'' = "there is a smell/fragrance" or "it smells/it has a fragrance"», so I think the "gusha jote" variants should have "binte" and the others can have either;
   • Splitting versions henceforth, so era/er': nominative singular definite/indefinite of erë "wind" or "smell";
   • e: adjectival article fem. sg. with erë;
   • gushës: genitive/dative/ablative singular definite of gush, which, quoting this Quora comment, «describes a specific part of the neck only underneath the chin», so I'll go with "neck";
   • Now the other version, where we have gusha, the definite singular nominative of gush above;
   • jote: nominative singular feminine of yt "your";
   • And of course the usual moj;
   So «There came a smell from [your] neck, babe» or «There came the smell of [your] neck, babe» or «Your neck carried, babe»;
8. L. 8: «Aromë portokalli.», aroma of orange, aromë being nom. sg. and portokalli being gen. sg. of portokall;
9. L. 9: «Ishim ne të dyja, moj,» (TS1, LT1, LT2), «Hijet e limonit, moj,» (vid, G1), «Rrinim ne të dynë, moj» (G2);
   
   • Splitting versions, so we first have Ishim/Rrinim: imperfect first-plural of jam/rri "be" or "remain, stay";
   • ne: we;
   • të: adjectival article nom. pl. indef. and more;
   • dyja/dynë: according to Gavagai, dyja is the feminine nom. pl. indef. of dy "two, both", and dynë «must be a dialectical form to refer to one feminine and one masculine noun», probably used because fem. pl. usually means all female while here we have a mixed couple (because come on, this song is old, no way there was a same-sex couple involved :) ), and dy, the masc. pl. usually used for mixed groups, misses a syllable; I wonder if it should be "dy ja", dy as said before, and ja "lo" or something like that;
   • Then the other version, Hijet: nom. pl. def. of hije "shadow";
   • For "e limonit" cfr. the "lulet e limonit" line (l. 3);
   • And of course the obligatory final moj;
   So «We both were, babe» or «We both remained, babe» or «The shadows of lemon trees, babe»;
10. L. 10: «O(h), porsi sorkadhe,» (TS1, LT2), «Lozin si sorkadhe,» (vid, G1), «O po, si sorkadhe,» (LT1), and the G2 «Nën një portokalle» which we already analysed at l. 1;
    
    • O: oh;
    • porsi: just like;
    • po: yes;
    • si: like, as;
    • sorkadhe: indefinite nom/acc sg/pl of "doe";
    • Lozin: probably a third-plural form of loz "play", I'd say present since the last line of the versions with lozin has hedhin which is present, but aorist and imperfect are also possible without an inflection table; though I think I've seen it translated as a present, which points to it being one;
    So «Oh, just like does», «Oh yes, like does», or «Played like does»;
11. L. 11: «Përmbi kokat tona, moj,»;
    
    • Përmbi: over, preposition with accusative;
    • kokat: dialectal def. pl. acc. of kokë "head";
    • tona: fem. pl. any case of ynë "our";
    • moj as always;
    So «Above our heads, babe»;
12. L. 12: «Lulet hidhnin valle.» (TS1, LT2, G2), «Lulet hedhin valle.» (vid, G1), «Lulet hedhnin (një) valle.» (LT1);
    
    • Lulet: nom. pl. def. of lule "flower";
    • hidhnin/hedhin/hedhnin: third-plural forms of hedh "throw", hedhin is present, hidhnin is imperfect, as for hedhnin that's what I hear in a certain video and what a certain version had (and still has), but what form is it? Presumably a dialectal imperfect, given that version has "ishim", doubtless imperfect, in l. 9;
    • (një): (a);
    • valle: dance;
    So «The flowers are/were throwing a dance».

As for my own version, here are a few notes:

• I preferred "Nën" (under) to "në/te" (at, beside);
• I chose "njoha" (recognized) for the first iteration of verse 1 and "ndala" for the second;
• I went for "Na binin në sy" in the first iteration, and then combined the "na" element with the "rrinin mbi kry'" element for the second one;
• I chose "Ngrije kokën lartë, moj, / Seç më dogji malli." for the first chorus, thinking she was playfully denying him a kiss (cfr. this comment which gave me the idea), and then finally she lowered her head because of the longing, "Ule kokën poshtë, moj, / Pse më dogji malli". Ah yes, pse=se=because;
• I used "Vinte gusha e jote, moj, / Aromë portokalli." first and "Vinte era e gushës, moj, / Aromë portokalli." then, I'll probably head back there to make that first iteration "binte";
• I used "Ishim ne të dyja, moj, / O, porsi sorkadhe", interpreting the comparison with does as a synonym of nimbleness and speed, as if they were running together through the orange trees after the kiss; therefore "Lulet hidhnin valle";
• Then I took the "Hijet e limonit, moj, / Lozin si sorkadhe" version, as if they were together again under the orange trees as the song is being sung and the flashback is over; so of course, "Lulet hedhin valle".
